Gaseous Phase

Carbon / Mixed Media Filters

Activated carbon has been used for many years to reduce fumes and gases from the air. Carbon filters are ideal for use in light cooking environments or where there is a secondary treatment for grease and smoke ie an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP). If there is no ESP unit carbon filters are not very practical since the large particles of the grease and smoke emissions plug the micro porous structure making them ineffective. A basic carbon filter system should have several sacrificial stages comprising, panel, bag and sometimes HEPA filters.

Maintenance

  • The first stage filter (typically a panel) has to be changed every one to two days.
  • The second stage filter (typically bag type) has to be changed every three to four weeks.
  • If a HEPA filter is installed this will need to be changed every two to four months dependent on the level of pre-filtration.
  • The carbon filter has to be changed every four to six months.
